Zach Cregger's 'Resident Evil' Hits $400 Million Worldwide Box Office Total

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil has continued to win big at the box office these last several weeks, with the film hitting another major box office milestone over the weekend.

Resident Evil has scared up a worldwide box office total of $400 million at the time of this article being written, $157.3 million of which has been made here in the United States.

Cregger’s new feature film spin on the video game franchise is one of just three horror movies this year to pull in $400 million or more, with both Backrooms and Obsession also unlocking that particular box office accomplishment. Backrooms finished its run with $400.6 million in total, an amount that Resident Evil may very well end up passing in the coming days.

The highest grossing installment in the RE film franchise prior to this was 2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter and its $312.2 million global haul, which Cregger’s movie easily passed.

That makes Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil the film franchise’s highest grossing installment to date.

What’s particularly noteworthy here is that it was just five years ago that Sony had previously attempted to reboot the Resident Evil film franchise with director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. But that film only opened to $5.3 million in the early days of the pandemic, going on to scare up just $41.9 million at the worldwide box office.

The production budget for Cregger’s Resident Evil movie was a reported $75 million, quite a bit higher than Welcome to Raccoon City‘s reported $25 million, but the gamble has paid off.

Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil currently has a 96% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it the best reviewed video game movie of all time on the platform. You can read our review here.

Are we getting a sequel? Don’t be surprised…
