'Resident Evil' Box Office: $400M and a Franchise Record

$400 million worldwide, and no Resident Evil movie has ever been there before. Zach Cregger’s reboot crossed the line over the weekend, passing Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, which closed out its 2016 run at $312 million.

Variety put the split at $157.4 million domestic and $242.6 million from overseas. China is the single biggest market at $71.4 million, followed by the United Kingdom at $19.4 million and Mexico at $12.7 million. Sony made the picture for $75 million and opened it in the United States on September 18.

Weapons Was His Previous Best

Resident Evil is comfortably the biggest film Cregger has directed. Weapons took $270 million worldwide in 2025 and Barbarian took $46 million in 2022, so the new one has outgrossed both of them put together. He passed Weapons in mid-October, when the China opening carried the total to $320 million.

The Third Horror Film to Clear $400 Million This Year

Obsession and Backrooms got there first, which makes 2026 the year horror put three films over the line. By Rotten Tomatoes’ count, Resident Evil is the eighth horror film of the 21st century to reach that number at all.

The 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City finished at $42 million worldwide on a $25 million budget. Cregger’s $108 million opening weekend beat that total in three days, and the $60 million domestic portion of it was a series record on its own. The previous best was the $26 million Resident Evil: Afterlife opened to in 2010, before adjusting for inflation.

It is still playing, too. The film finished seventh this weekend with $2.5 million from 1,943 theaters, a drop of about 13 percent in its fifth frame.

Austin Abrams plays Bryan Hodukavich, the medical courier the film follows into Raccoon City. Milla Jovovich carried the previous run of the series as Alice across six films beginning in 2002. Cregger goes next to The Flood for Warner Bros., with Jennifer Lawrence attached.
