The 65 Movies That Have Made More Than $1 Billion At The Global Box Office

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office in five days this year, becoming the second-fastest film in history to hit the milestone, behind 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Christopher Nolan’s epic, The Odyssey, also sailed into the billion-dollar threshold, making this a great year for Universal releases.

They join Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 and Lionsgate and Universal’s Michael, which passed the $1 billion mark to set a record as the most successful biopic in history and mark a historic first for Lionsgate, as well as Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo’s animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which reached the milestone in early June. Together, these releases continue to expand the exclusive club of films to reach the $1 billion club, alongside 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie and 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Among the elite list of billion-dollar-grossing films are sequels, Disney remakes and iconic franchises such as Star Wars, Avatar, James Bond, The Lord of the Rings, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harry Potter, The Fast & The Furious, Jurassic Park, The Dark Knight, Transformers and Disney and Pixar toons.

The 2023 summer smash Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, propelled Greta Gerwig into the rankings as the first solo female director to reach the 10-digit milestone. Jennifer Lee hit the billion level with Disney’s Frozen II (2019), co-directing alongside Chris Buck.
